On Competittion Mechanism
doi: https://doi.org/10.31810/rsel.52.2.3
Keywords:
Competition; paradigmatic relations; alternatives; inferenceAbstract
The aim of this paper is to explore the consequences of incorporating competition mechanisms into the explanation of some phenomena. The underlying question ultimately concerns the place of paradigmatic relations in the organization of linguistic systems: their status, their role in interpretation and grammar, and their explanatory power. The advantages of alternative-based inferential approaches over code-based models are highlighted as various interpretive phenomena are discussed. From a wider perspective, competition is then examined as a possible shaper of other grammatical domains. The challenges that these explanations must face are brought to the forefront, and so are the new paths open by recent research.
