A taxonomy of abbreviations and acronyms. Critical review and terminological proposals
doi: http://dx.doi.org/10.31810/RSEL.49.11
Abstract
The object of this article is twofold. First, to examine the conceptual confusion found in Spanish abbreviations, particularly in acronyms, as a result of the numerous and variegated types and subtypes which conform to this process of word-formation. In the second place, to look closely at the varying terminology in other languages, like English, French and German, with the aim of proposing a more descriptive and refined typology which allows for a more effective differentiation of the modalities of abbreviated units. To that end, the article reviews the designations used in lexicographic repertoires, notably dictionaries and glossaries, and in the theoretical research studies on abbreviations and acronyms.
Keywords: abbreviation; acronyms; neology; lexicography; terminology.
