Abstract

This paper offers a lexical-syntactic approach, based on Mateu 2002, to account for the argument structure of motion events. We focus on the systematic difference of languages with regard to the organization of semantic components like motion, path, manner and so on. We incorporate the lexicalization patterns of Talmy 1991, 2000 to our lexicalsyntactic approach and this proposal allows us to classify languages into verb-framed or satellite-framed in a more transparent manner. This approach is applied to motion events in Chinese and, with the established criteria, the classification of Chinese by Talmy as a satellite-framed language can be maintained. Lastly, we propose that different factors contribute to the inter/intra-linguistic differences and that these factors may belong to different dimensions or different levels. The classification of a language as satellite-framed or verb-framed is universal. Moreover, in order to have a full picture of motion events occurring in different languages, consideration of specific factors of each language is required.

Keywords: argument structure; conflation and incorporation; lexicalization patterns; motion events; satellite-framed languages; verbal-framed languages.
