ABSTRACT

The purpose of this paper is to study the correlation between the initial position and the conjunctive function exhibited by some Ancient Greek adverbs. The focus will be on ἔπειτα, an adverb of time expressing posteriority which is mainly used as a conjunctive in Classical Greek. This contrasts with its relatively frequent use as an adjunct in Archaic Greek. A clear clue as to the specialization shown by ἔπειτα as a conjunctive is found in its position: in Archaic Greek it is not fixed, while there are very few exceptions to first position in Classical Greek. An excursus is added on the employment of ὕστερον, another adverb of time similar to ἔπειτα, which, in turn, replaced it as a verb adjunct expressing posteriority.

Key Words: adverbs of time, conjunctive adverbs, word order, discourse anaphora, connectives.
