PUNTUACIÓN Y COGNICIÓN SOCIAL EN DOS FOROS DE INTERNET

En los últimos años, la escritura ha sufrido un proceso de transformación radical, gracias a las nuevas tecnologías de la información y de la comunicación (TIC). El texto producido en las actuales TIC constituye una nueva modalidad de la comunicación, un híbrido entre lo oral y lo escrito. Entre las características del discurso mediado destaca un uso innovador de la puntuación y de los emoticonos. El presente estudio explora, desde el marco de la teoría de la relevancia, la naturaleza y función de tales signos en los mensajes de dos foros en línea. El análisis revela que los usuarios puntúan combinando tres tipos de signos: marcas de puntuación de primer orden o régimen, marcas de modalidad en un uso enfático, y emoticonos. Cada uno de estos tres órdenes de signos procedimentales proporciona diferentes tipos de input al mecanismo cognitivo de comprensión, activando con ello procedimientos inferenciales de dominio específico vinculados a la cognición social.

Abstract

In recent years, writing has experienced a radical transformation, thanks to the new information and communication technologies. The text produced in these new mediums represents a novel form of communication, a hybrid between orality and writing. One of the most significant features of the mediated discourse is the innovative use of punctuation marks and emoticons. Adopting the relevance framework, the present study explores the nature and function of these signs in the messages of two online forums. The analysis reveals that the users punctuate by combining thus activating three types of marks: first order marks, modality marks used emphatically, and emoticons. Each of these three orders of procedural elements provides different inputs to the cognitive mechanism of comprehension, thus activating domain-specific inferential procedures linked to social cognition.
